Sugar Venom

August 14, 2017 in Makeup

An eco-friendly, ethically conscious cosmetic brand.

Made from premium mineral products, 100% vegan, organic, natural, and of course, cruelty-free.

For awhile now I have been searching for cosmetic companies that are ethical while still being a brand I want to use everyday (many companies have jumped on board of the ethical and cruelty-free train but haven’t stood up to the test). I came across a company in Australia that checked off all the boxes. Sugar Venom Cosmetics provides makeup without compromises. They provide cruelty-free, vegan makeup made with natural and non-toxic ingredients while still remaining an ethically conscious brand. On top of all that, I can honestly say it’s a brand I will add to my arsenal.

Below are the products I tested out and some details about each one:

Let’s start off with the Lip Products!

I love that I was able to test out each type of lip product Sugar Venom carries, from their lipstick and liner to their lip balm (yes, they even have lip balm!). The thing I like most about SV’s lip products is that all of them are great for every day use.

Mineral Lip Gloss

Where do I begin?! What is really nice about the lip gloss is it’s not “sticky”. If you’re a lip gloss wearer you are well aware of what I am talking about, that unwanted, some how reminds you of glue, sticky...that just awful feeling (for those of you who do not wear lip gloss, think of when you used to put glue on your fingers and pull them apart). Instead it’s creamy and your lips feel well moisturized.

Colours I tested: Lily and Aiko

Organic Lip Balm

Moisturizing? Check! Feels and smells amazing? Also check! Okay seriously, this lip balm is kind of all sorts of wonderful. Not to mention it’s lightweight and also adds a slight tint of bronze (I tested the vanilla one). The thing I noticed and loved about it was you didn’t have to reapply often. When I did reapply though, I could tell how much better my lips felt. This lip balm delivers on every level.

Colours I tested:  Vanilla

Natural Lip Stick and Liner

These next two products I tested out are not up on SV's website as of yet, so I felt extremely lucky to be one of the first to try it. The liner is creamy while still applying to the lips without feathering and the creamy lipstick is moisturizing without being hard to apply (win, win right there!). Once again, after I took it off, my lips still felt amazing. Both the liner and lipstick are long lasting and the colour quality is top notch. What I have found with all Sugar Venom’s lip products is none of them are drying. Great for summer but of course year round as well.

Colours I tested: Truffle (Lipstick) and Work Hard (Liner)

Next? On to the Eyes! Shadows, Primer, and Mascara.

The thing I find about Sugar Venom's eyeshadows is that I can see them being easy for everyone to use. From professional Makeup Artists to even those who only throw makeup on for special occasions, any skill level, doesn’t matter.

Loose Mineral Eyeshadows

I recently showed a friend the eyeshadow colours that are available from Sugar Venom and she fell in love with a lot of them. She had every right to, the colours are beautiful! SV’s Loose Mineral Eyeshadows give you that pop of colour you are after without the chemicals (look great, feel great). Since they are mineral eyeshadows they are super light weight. The shadows apply nicely with or without a primer. When I was testing them out, I did one eye with dry shadow and the other with wet. What I found was, even with the shadow dry the colour was still vibrant while managing to keep the look more natural or dewy. With making the shadow a bit wet, I was able to make the look more bold while keeping the integrity of the colour. I, myself, am not usually one who enjoys using loose eyeshadows but after using Sugar Venom’s I will be adding it to my regulars.

Colours I tested: Westwood, Curie, and Twiggy

Natural Eye Primer

As a bonus I also got to test out SV's Prim & Proper Natural Eye Primer, it goes on smooth and easy plus it’s not cakey at all! I prefer my usual eye primer (we all tend to swear by a product and for me it’s my eye primer) but this one is growing on me more and more. Not to mention it works well with other eyeshadows. I found that it helped my shadow be applied more smoothly and made it so there was less touch ups that needed to happen throughout the day. This primer doesn’t seem to be up on the website yet (I got to test a bunch of yet to be released products) but once it’s out I can see them selling out fast.

Natural High Performance Mascara

Oh my goodness! This is my new favourite. I am super picky when it comes to mascara and with a lot of the cruelty free brands it has been difficult to find one I actually love, until now! The formula in this baby is to die for. It’s water resistant, non-clumping, and it’s made in Canada (okay, I found this fact awesome because I am also made in Canada haha)! The box and product itself says Incredible Volume, and it delivers on that. I was surprised in the amount of volume it gave since other ‘natural’ brands don’t give off a finish like this one does. It is nice to finally have a mascara that I love and can suggest to others who want to go the cruelty-free route.

Last but not least, Highlighter, Bronzer, and Blush.

Ahh!! Okay, we are all in for a treat with these next products. Well… I’m pretty excited about them at least (you should be too, trust me)! As we all know highlighting and contouring has become and still remains very popular. Sugar Venom is launching some creme Blush, Bronzer, and even a Highlighting product which I’m pretty sure you’ll fall in love with just like I have.

Blush - Natural Lip n’ Cheek

In all honest, I rarely use blush myself.  Maybe every once and awhile I might throw on some blush to make it look like I am actually alive (that little pop of colour does more than you can imagine!) but that’s about it.  Sugar Venom’s blush is quite cool because it can be used as a lip product as well. When I applied the blush on my cheeks it was very natural looking as if I was born that way. However, using this product on my lips is what sold me. This blush will now be apart of my travel makeup just on account of how versatile it really is.

Colours I tested: Cherry Mash and Strawberry Fields

Natural Cream Bronzer

If you have been trying to step up your contouring game, this might be the perfect product for you. It’s easy to apply and requires very minimal blending. So if contouring isn’t something you’re the best at on account of blending, this honestly could be what you have been searching for. I applied the bronzer with a brush but you could use your finger if its easier/more comfortable for you and end up with the same results.

Colours I tested: Travel To Mercury and Australian Amber

Natural Cream Highlighter

With Sugar Venom’s very lightweight formula, it's so much easier to make your highlight more “natural” and as subtle as you’d like. It’s also great to use in the corner of your eyes to just make them pop a tad bit more. There’s not much to say about this creme highlighter besides that it is amazing. For sure one of my new favourites and I will be using this baby in my daily routine.

Colour I tested: Saturn White

My Top Five Favourite Sugar Venom Products

I was able to narrow down all of SV’s awesome products I tested to make a ‘My Top Five' list. If you take anything away from this review, just know that these five products are the ones I will be suggesting to others when they are looking for cruelty-free beauty products! The top five are:  the Creme Highlighter, Natural High Performance Mascara, Organic Lip Balm, Natural Lip n’ Cheek Blush,  and I of course had to pick my favourite Eyeshadow colour, Twiggy. I’m not huge on lip gloss or non-matte lipstick, that’s the only reason why you won’t see them in my top five.

When I was testing out all the products, I ended up doing one of my favourite looks to date, even went well with my hair! Here are some selfies (with no filters or editing) showing off the look:

I plan to do a video tutorial using each type of Sugar Venom's products, featuring a more 'everyday look’. Subscribe to this page or follow me on Instagram for updates on when I’ll be posting that video. I also want to send out a big thank you to Sugar Venom! Thank you for replying to me and having the same vision on what makeup should be. Beautiful, well made, products that work and are never tested on animals. There are other brands out there that are trying to make their mark in the ethical way and Sugar Venom is just that. A big bonus was that I had a lot of fun and I am happy I have now found a Cruelty-Free Mascara that actually works how I want it to!
